DEK is implicated in acute myeloid leukemia and is associated with t(6;9)(p23;q34.1) resulting in DEK-NUP214 fusion protein. The DEK protein binds to cruciform and superhelical DNA thereby inducing positive supercoils into closed circular DNA. Multi-lineage dysplasia and basophilia are often associated with this fusion entity. This fusion is observed in both children and adults and typically has an unfavorable clinical outcome.
